5 Ways to Help the Hungry for $1 or Less

The United Nations has estimated that the cost of eliminating world hunger is about $195 billion a year. Twenty-two nations have pledged to raise this money by each donating a little less than one percent of 22 of their national income.

Just one percent can make a difference. And so can one dollar. Shopping at Collectibles 4 World Hunger.com is one way you can easily make a difference in the lives of hungry people around the world. But don't stop there. Here are five more ways you can help end hunger for $1 or less.

1. Click on The Hunger Site - cost: free
Since 1999, the original click-to-donate site has been able to donate nearly 62 million pounds of food for the hungry. All donations are paid for by advertisers, so all you have to do is visit every day and click.

2. Improve your vocabulary at FreeRice.com - cost: free
Started in October 2007, this site challenges you to pick one of four synonyms for words that get increasingly more difficult. For each word you get right, the site donates the equivalent of 10 grains of rice. Like The Hunger Site, FreeRice.com is able to make the donations due to advertising revenue, so the cost to you is completely free.

3. Click at FightHunger.org - cost: free
Look in the upper right-hand corner of this UN-sponsored site aimed at eradicating child hunger by 2015 and click the orange button that says "Click to Feed a Child." Your click will generate an advertiser-sponsored donation that will provide one meal for a needy child. As of November 2007, the site had generated enough clicks to provide meals for over 1.3 million children.

4. Send a letter to Congress - cost: free by email or 42 cents by mail
Send a letter to your Congressional representative and ask him or her to help end world poverty by honor the U.S. pledge to donate more to international aid. Learn more and find a sample letter at Poverty.com.

5. Donate $1 through the FightHunger One Million Dollar PayPal Challenge - cost: $1 (or more, if you prefer)
The UN World Food Programme is demonstrating just how powerful one can be. If one million people each donate just $1 through this online effort, the WFP's School Feeding Program will be able to feed 5 million hungry children. See the video below for voices from around the world of people supporting this effort.
